Period CostumesThe Ogunquit Heritage Museum opened in 2001. The opportunity for an Ogunquit Museum was created by the donation of the Captain James Winn House, a ca. 1780 Maine cape, by Phyllis Perkins, who gave it to the town for preservation. The house was on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of Maine architecture. Moved with funds donated by the Ogunquit Rotary, to Jacobs Field. An enthusiastic committee was formed. Hard times and circumstances prevented the completion of their vision to open a museum.

Our mission is to present educational exhibits and programs that inform and help us remember the heritage of Ogunquit of fishing, farming, ship building, and sea captains, forward to a world renowned art colony and summer theater. Today our village is a busy tourist destination. Through the years, artists, authors, and company presidents came to partake in its beauty and inspiration.

The Museum contains the Littlefield Genealogical Library, dedicated to the research of Littlefields and allied families. The Charles Littlefield Seaman estate donated his entire collection and research to the museum. Because the Littlefield family was one of the early inhabitants of Ogunquit, Charles wanted to have a Littlefield Library here. One of the foremost experts in Littlefield research, his papers also included information on many early Ogunquit families.

Local Fisherman The Museum has four main focuses, the art colony, maritime history, Ogunquit history, and Ogunquit's architecture. Each year a new exhibit featurs a new aspect of those four focuses.

We welcome Ogunquit donations of artifacts, furniture, family histories, ship's logs, archives and photographs. In the modern age of technology, copying archive and photos is possible so you can keep your family treasures with your family. The archives gives us a historical window into the time when your family were citizens of Ogunquit.  If you have any artifacts that will help us further tell the story, we would appreciate the donation. Our building is secure with fire and security alarms. If you have something you would like to donate please contact the curator, Barbara Woodbury.

We are developing a school program for children and are excited about the opportunity. Teachers will have two choices, a complete kit on maritime history for the class room or a visit to the museum. Future historical lectures will be offered, with experts helping us understand the history of our area.
