The Ogunquit Heritage Museum is developing a project to replicate the famous Ogunquit Dory. The dory, a variation of the Swampscott Dory, was built by William Henry Perkins and his son Moses in the late 1800's and early 1900's in their boat shop on Wharf Lane. William Henry was a master boat builder. Many people came from surrounding areas to buy his dories.

The Ogunquit Dory was unique in design to accommodate the rugged rocky coast and the strong tides. They had a keel, a sail and center board which aided fisherman on their long trips out to sea in pursuit of fish. The dories were used for trawling and lobstering. They varied in length from 16 ft to longer models depending on the wish of the fisherman. Their trade mark colors were a dark green sides with a bright yellow gunwales.

Our goal is at the end of the project to have a sea worthy replica of the Ogunquit Dory.

The plan is as follows:

Step 1 - The first phase will be research and design. A working plan will be developed
Step 2. - We will gather financial backing, asking the public, businesses and corporate donors.
Step 3. - We will gather together a group of interested "boat builders" to get the project rolling. The Dory will be constructed at the Museum so lots of people can check the progress. We would hope to get students involved.
Step 4. - Gala launching at Perkins Cove.

This project has been a dream of the Museum's for many years. Come join the fun!
